Lori Leak is an African-American girl who lives with her mother, father, and brother in a warm and loving home. She is a very curious girl who likes to explore things — and that sometimes means she gets into trouble (although she calls it an adventure.) She is very intelligent and often her parents or brother find her at night reading encyclopedias under her bed covers with a flashlight.

Mr. Leak is an engineering consultant. He often must travel, and he takes his family with him. That is how Lori gets to travel. His hobby is art. He paints and sketches.

Lori adores her older brother, Earl, who is usually busy playing football (he is a running back) and hanging with his friends. Bit he does spend some time with Lori doing things such as playing board games and watching movies.
